With worse conditions, you need more aggressive techniques. Depending on the contamination, you might only need to wash with water. If water sprinkled on the wall is not readily absorbed, then the surface must be handled differently. Generally, stucco that is applied directly to solid surfaces is placed in two coats that together total 5/8 inch of thickness. Unless it’s very hot, dry and/or windy, moisture on the wall together with that in the plaster is usually sufficient for curing. It dampens the unit, reducing its water demand and the potential of premature dryout. This prepares the unit surface to absorb paste from plaster. Immediately prior to plastering, the wall should be pre-wetted. If it is readily absorbed, then the surface is expected to bond well with stucco. Potential for bond can be quickly checked by a simple test: sprinkle the wall with some water to see how it absorbs. Partial bond will create undesirable stresses and can lead to delamination and cracking of the stucco layer. The entire surface must have uniform bonding potential or you can run into problems. Older walls may have bond-inhibiting characteristics, in the form of paint, sealer, or some other coating or dirt on the surface. This is generally not a concern with new walls. If contamination is present on the substrate surface, good bond is inhibited. Concrete masonry surfaces are both absorbent and textured, two things necessary for bond. ASTM Standard C 926, Specification for Application of Portland Cement-Based Plaster, permits direct application of stucco to solid surfaces like concrete and masonry as long as bond is sufficient. Portland cement adheres well to lots of materials, especially to other materials made from the same type of ingredients. As such, they have a great affinity for each other. Stucco is made from the same materials as concrete and concrete masonry. With a substrate of concrete or concrete masonry, is it necessary to use lath? Metal lath is regularly used over stud wall construction with or without sheathing materials. If your walls are even everywhere else and in good condition, you can use any general wall primer. This question probably arises because plaster is often attached to wall surfaces that have metal lath affixed to them. My walls needed a good prime as they were uneven where old paint had been removed from removing the wallpaper, so I used Ever Build Fill Coat to even out the walls and block any stains. Step 5: Primeīefore you paint or decorate you’ll need to prime your wall and cover over the filler so there is no mismatch in colouration when you apply your topcoat. After sanding, if there were any pitted or problem areas, I added a bit more One Strike and sanded again. I just sanded back until the filler and the wall were level and there were no lumps or bumps. I used an electric palm sander with a fine grade sandpaper (if you do not have one then a sanding block will do the trick). It says on the tub of one One Strike that you do not need to sand after application, but as a DIYer as opposed to a professional (and the hole itself being huge), I found I did need to sand to achieve a level surface. If you want to try this out for yourself in your own home, this is my easy step-by-step guide to how I did it… As it turns out, after a bit of research and buying some recommended products, I managed to fix the wall in a couple of days! I’m delighted with the end result - the wall now is strong, sturdy and smooth. A few small taps on the walls with my hand and the remaining plaster dropped to the floor! I really didn’t want to spend much money redecorating this room - even if I expected I probably would have to call in a professional plasterer to fix this situation, I wanted to at least try and DIY it myself first. The discovery of the large hole was made when I removed wallpaper in this room (to be honest, the wallpaper was the only thing holding the wall together!) When I removed the paper - a lot of plaster came with it. This wall had previously encountered water damage from the window sill above it, and even though the cause of the water infiltration was fixed some time ago, the interior plaster had just caved. It was 80cm wide, sandy, broken and crumbly. Although I’ve always been confident enough to fill small drill holes and general wear and tear in my plastered walls, the huge size of the hole to be repaired in my home office absolutely terrified me.

However, I still had a good time with the movie. It always feels like the different elements are fighting with one another to be the leading force in the movie. The way that the tones shift from wacky comedy, to romance, to the minor hints at horror that come along with Liam Neeson’s character Martin never really mesh in a successful way. The only weakness to High Spirits that I can find is in the writing of the movie. The slapstick element still remained in the movie, to a lesser degree, and mostly relegated to the supporting cast, yet it was still as strong as it was before the transition. Steve Guttenberg masterfully portrayed the comedic romantic interest to the ghostly Daryl Hannah and had me hoping for their relationship to flourish regardless of the marriages they were each already in. But I fell for the love story and was invested in what was going on in the movie. When it transitioned into actual ghosts, I was thrown for a loop. The fake ghostly shenanigans brought a smile to my face and were executed well. I’m a sucker for slapstick comedy of the kind that was presented through the first half hour or so in the movie. It hit every button of joy inside me and I had an extremely good time. Yet I enjoyed almost every minute as I was watching it. The ever-changing tones and wacky concept could be very off putting. It is not a movie that would be easy for most people to enjoy. A lot of it has to do with how messy the narrative is because it feels like all of those different movies mixed into one. I figured out why as the movie played out. When I started the movie and saw the cast list, my first thought was to wonder why I had never known about this movie before being assigned the task of reviewing it. Like I said, it feels like a bunch of movies put together. The rest of the movie is spent convincing the guests that ghosts are real, and having Jack fall in love with Mary while Sharon falls in love with Martin. When Martin Brogan (Liam Neeson) is once again about to stab his wife Mary Plunkett Brogan (Daryl Hannah), Jack steps in the way and inadvertently begins a romance with the ghostly Mary. Jack goes to bed, only to stumble upon some real ghosts in a recreation of a murder. After discovering that the castle is doomed, Peter and Jack drink well into the night. The story quickly changes after the guests arrive and realize that the haunting is a sham. These guests include Jack Crawford (Steve Guttenberg) and his wife Sharon (Beverly D’Angelo), single woman Miranda (Jennifer Tilly), Brother Tony (Peter Gallagher) who hopes to become a father in his church, and a family headed by parapsychologist Malcolm (Martin Ferrero) and his wife Marge (Connie Booth). So he comes up with a scheme to pretend it’s haunted and get a bunch of guests. It starts with Peter Plunkett (Peter O’Toole) finding out that his castle is about to be taken over if he can’t get money. The movie feels like three or four different movies put together into one movie. If that sounds like a messy concoction, it is. High Spirits is a 1988 romantic slapstick comedy, with hints of supernatural horror added in for good measure. High Spirits, the movie I will be reviewing, is the first of his written films that I have seen, and let me tell you, it was an interesting one. The only film of his I had seen prior to now was a movie called Interview with a Vampire, which he directed. He has won an Academy Award for his writing of The Crying Game. In the case of the movie I’m about to review, it was Neil Jordan. But there are other times when I get to look into one of my blind spots in movie history and finally see a work by a respected artist of whom I had very little knowledge. In most cases, because of the kind of movies that I review, they are the unknown directors hoping to break into the business. One thing that I enjoy about reviewing movies is discovering people who I had not yet seen any work from. Can there be love between a human and ghost? Jack and Mary are going to try and find out. Jack, on the other hand, after meeting pretty ghost Mary, is very eager to believe. Sharon’s father holds the mortgage on Castle Plunkett, so she’s hoping to debunk the ghosts. Among the tourists are married couple Jack and Sharon. The trouble begins when a busload of American tourists arrive – along with some real ghosts. When Peter Plunkett’s Irish castle turned hotel is about to be repossesed, he decides to spice up the attraction a bit for the ‘Yanks’ by having his staff pretend to haunt the castle. The original game files exist, but if you download them to your Mac today, you won’t be able to open them. The problem with these old games is they were written for Mac hardware (PowerPC) that is no longer supported. To give credit where credit’s due, Pangea Software developed most of these games, plus plenty of other games you could purchase separately, while Marble Blast Gold was developed by GarageGames. It doesn’t end there, though: The iMac G5 also shipped with two unique titles: Nanosaur 2, a sequel to the original dino shooter (this time starring a murderous pterodactyl), and Marble Blast Gold, in which you controlled a marble through a series of progressively challenging race tracks to the finish line. These games wouldn’t be a sell in 2022, but they did push some boundaries for Mac gaming and 3D development back in the day. (Again, it’s great.) And Cro-Mag Rally is a kart racer game that’s set in the ancient world, complete with “time-appropriate” karts and weapons. (It’s great, I promise.) In Nanosaur, you’re a dinosaur armed to the teeth, outrunning other dinosaurs in an effort to steal their eggs. In case you don’t have the fond memories of these titles, here’s a quick summary: Bugdom has you playing as a pill bug traversing 10 levels to save your world from an invasion of enemy ants. What happened to Bugdom, Nanosaur, and Cro-Mag Rally? I was able to play the games I wanted to play, which were usually the Mac’s two Harry Potter ports ( those soundtracks, though), but my favourite part of the G3 was the pre-installed titles: I didn’t have an N64, PlayStation, or GameCube, but I had Bugdom, Nanosaur, and Cro-Mag Rally. To the outside world it certainly wasn’t a gaming machine, but to me it was a premiere PC. She finds herself at the entrance to The Hurricane ride. These videos are probably the most clearly stated and thorough look at what to expect with some of the graphics cards available on the market. Once again, I’m now calling on Tech Notice to come to bat. Hardware Accelerated Encoding with Premiere and After Effects.Premiere has basically opened up to any type of editor out there, those that build and those that buy. You essentially have way more options than going with something pre-built into your machine. One of the reasons Premiere is now such a powerhouse for Windows is the ability to custom-pick and build your PC to handle a powerful CPU, and now GPU (since Premiere has GPU hardware acceleration). This is what’s handling the actual footage you bring into Premiere Pro. Here are the best options and prices for each, respectively:Ī GPU (graphics processing unit) is a card that’s designed for graphics and video rendering. Okay, so that gives us an idea for where to start with our CPU hunt and what we can expect to pay (as of right now in fall 2021). Take, for example, this breakdown comparison of around fifteen different CPUs currently available and compatible with Premiere Pro: However, there are resources that will list how these stack up against each other. Obviously, I haven’t personally tested each and every CPU available. That being said, which CPU would ideally work best for Premiere? Let’s dive in. Like most post-production situations, you’d benefit from having a decent CPU to work with. In the context of this specific situation, the CPU has previously been a major factor when using Premiere Pro. Still with me? It’s the brain, essentially. So, it takes in information, figures out what to do with it, then does it. CPUs are essentially chips that receive information from different parts of your computer, then perform somewhat of a calculation. Let’s go over the basics and where to look for the products that will best match your computer setup, so you can have an idea of where to start or what you need. While this isn’t exactly an article about GPUs and CPUs, it’s important to understand how these tools work in relation to what Premiere needs from your computer in order to perform to the best of its ability.
But, with coronavirus, I have things on hold for a bit yet.Īs far as retention, it needs work to. I have thought about starting such an avatar making class but I am not that good at it, so I'd probably hire people who are. How to make a mesh avatar class for newbies to go to is not a bad idea but it still doesn't exist, not that I know of. One you had all those down with a Classic, the rest was just buying clothing and accessories and decorating a home. In my first two times in SL which were Classic avatars only, it took me about a month to get my avatar where I wanted it to be with shape, one hair, one skin and an AO and some dances. Even just learning the HUD/HUDS takes time. Getting her the right shape, hair, eyes, make-up, clothes, all takes time to develop a persona. They aren't that easy and I'm even making one now with my AIDA head I fairly recently purchased and it's taking hours just to find something that looks good on her to wear. I still buy lindens today if I want stuff.Īs far as retention, I also see there is a difficulty in making a mesh avatar. I did work in SL on my first stint in around 2006, but I also always bought lindens if I wanted more than I made. And having no money and no way to get money is certainly part of that. Officially they (Ebbe for one) has said that it isn't that folks don't sign up - it is the RETENTION that is the issue. Same in Sinespace so there really isn't a gaming for RL dollars scenario. Money from quests and gift money couldn't be taken out of Sansar, only used within world. You didn't make much money on each quest, but you learned your way around navigating and such and eventually you had some Sandollars that you could spend in the store to spiffy up your avatar or you home. We had a LOT more traffic in Sansar when the quests were going on. So I rented a nice little shop in a mainland mall somewhere (mainland was much prettier then but still has ugly spots of course) and now I have been a long time creator. And back then the Marketplace wasn't that popular. Eventually I earned enough to upload some textures and started my own tiny store. You could earn money on Trivia at Calla and I really really did that a lot. When I joined SL there were still camping chair (and easels and guitars etc etc) although not as many as had been I understand. When you get to a new platform and you can't even buy some gifts because they are in vendors and you have NO money at all, it ain't fun. They have that in Sinespace and it had me going through all the areas if the store and decorating my VERY LOVLY FREE HOUSE with big big yard - and then exploring. It was mostly an over 21 crowd.īUT regardless, I think that starting money IS a big draw. I can't speak to IMVU since I haven't been there, but Sansar allowed folks that young and we rarely saw them (when they were there it was pretty obvious LOL). Of course, when your target group isn't employed and most 13 year olds aren't, handing them 4000 credits is a big draw. I find this confusing because if the unit type was set to meters this should show and it doesn't! I mean if I am in meters and draw a box of 10 x 20 or if I am in mm and draw a box of 10000 x 20000 mm the way this is represented in A3 paper should be the same, shouldn't it? What is it that I am missing here?ĭo I have to assume that as a matter of fact DraftSIght only deals correclty with mm or inches, all other unit types must be introduced using some kind of "trick" to obtain the intended behaviour? On the other hand if I open a new document with unit types as mm and I draw a box of 10000 x 20000 mm big (again 10 x 20 meters as a matter of fact) then the scaling occurs similarly to the drawing you did. There you can see that the box appear as a tiny little box in the middle while, according to my reasoning, it should exceed the A3 paper size because at 1:1 scale it is 10x20 meters wide. If I change the scale to be 1:1 the drawing desappears: does that mean that it is bigger that the A3 paper format? If this is the case why doesn't the rectangle become red? Or may be it does become red only if a portion can be printed?īut.I did another similar experiment which I think is meaningful (to me at least): I opened a new document which has meters as unit type by default, and drew a box of 10x20 (meters, or so I supposed) when I go to Print and set the print configuration as you showed above, I get this picture: The only thing I didn't catch at the beginning was that you had to set the units type as mm as well (you didn't say that but I guess you assumed it.). Ok, I did this exercise too and I got the same result as you. This exercise was done entirely from within model space. If everything is to your satisfaction then go ahead and print your drawing. Click on the button and you will see your drawing as it will appear on the paper. If it were red then that would indicate some portion of our drawing falls outside the edges of the paper.Īs a final check if you look in the lower left hand corner of the Print Configuration dialog window you will see a button labeled "Print Preview.". The fact that it is green tells us everything will be printed. The green rectangle/letter is a pseudo-representation of what falls within the confines of the paper. In the upper right corner there appears a white border representing the sheet size (297x420). Look to the far right and you also see that I have elected to center my model space geometry on the paper. Using the down arrow after the option Scale: User-defined I can select 1:10 which is then reflected below. Note that I "unchecked" the option "Fit to paper". Let's say I have drawn a box with the dimensions of 2100 by 1485 and I want to print it on an A3 sheet of paper at a scale of 1:10. Looking for more AutoCAD text tips?
